27 April 2011 - our big day. It marked the end of our journey in GEM. Our journey ended beautifully with a Silver award. Disappointed we may be, we all knew we gave our best. SYF doesn't label us. So don't be disheartened, we're worth so much more than that silver and we know it :)

We're still proud of ourselves, aren't we?

Thanks to everyone who gave us your support and to all the seniors who made us that lovely booklet overflowing with all your well wishes. Thanks for the people who woke up early to help us out that day, our dearest JC1s who contributed as well as everyone who went all the way to Republic Polytechnic with us. We really appreciate it!

Guitar Camp 2011

As you all know, GEM camp just ended. Although it was organised mostly for the SYF batch to engage in some intensive practice, we didn't forget the JC1s as well. We had lots of fun playing the games they've organised for all of us. And I must say they really put in a lot of efforts for it, thanks! It was a good break for all of us from all those hours of practising.

All thanks to the organisers of today (Yu Qi, Andrew, Meng Sheng, Leslie, Jun Wei and Shane), GEM had a fun day out at Pasir Ris Park :)

We were split into 2 groups and had our go at a series of exciting games (Captain's Ball, balloon-and-tennis-ball game and of course, water bomb)

The two teams:

Pictures beneath pretty much sum up the day of bursting balloons, water bombing our dear student conductor Xin Zhan, eating ham sandwiches and just simply having fun!

We should so have more games day. The people who didn't turn up today, you guys really missed out big thing. Aw. Be sure to attend the next one!

Details for volunteers

Hey all, below are the details of the task of the volunteers :)

Games Day- Amazing Race! @ Pasir Ris Park

We will need a group of volunteers of around 10 members.

These members will be helping us out to plan the games stations during the race and also they will be the stationmasters of individual stations.

Task of these volunteers:

1) Plan out a Route for the Amazing Race with 5 Stations

2) Each volunteer choose a partner to be one station’s station master

3) Come out with activity/task for groups to complete to gain points

4) Come out with a Points System

5) Allocation of members into Groups (4 groups in total)

6) Collate all the above information into a proposal and send it to Leslie by 3^rd of Dec (Friday) either by email or pass it to me during the practice.

A Guitarist's Finger Nail Care

Hi all, this is a guide to how we should file our nails so they are optimum for playing :)

The length, shape and surface of your fingernails have a direct effect on your playing. Generally, The nails cannot be too short or long, and must have a perfect roundness with absolutely no corners at the cuticle.

Filing:

Hold the file pointing toward your face (looking down its length), with the finer surface facing upward.

Holding your finger at a ninety degree angle (perpendicular) to the file, place the nail on the surface.

The vector of your finger should be around forty-five degrees to the plane of the file, so that the nail is being filed somewhat from beneath.

File the nail by evenly drawing the file back and forth with the left hand, exerting even pressure and guiding it in place with the right thumb.

Length:

Hold your hand with the palm facing you, fingers extended with the tips pointing upward.

You should see the tips of the nails just peeking past the fingertips (1 to 2 mm past the fingertip is plenty).

Excessive length causes the nail to drag along the string, causing wasted effort and disrupting the timing of alternation and arpeggios.

Uneven lengths are also disruptive; make sure no nail is significantly longer or shorter than the others.

Note that excessive length is common among players with little or no training; the extra length requires less precise nail placement during fingerstroke and can thus make playing seem easier.

If you are significantly shortening your nails, you may initially find your fingerstroke is less accurate.

If so, spend some time concentrating on placing on the exact same spot of the nail for every fingerstroke.

Shape:

Hold your fingers pointing toward you, so you see only the edge of each nail;

each edge will form a more straight or a more curved line.

Now look at the entire nail, from above.

If filed perpendicularly and from beneath, the straight- edged nails should have a more square shape,

and the curve- edged nails should have a more elliptical shape.

If the edge of the nail is straight but the shape is not very distinctly square,

you've probably been filing the nail from its side and the nail will have to grow out a bit to develop more body on the corner.

If the corners of the square shapes are sharply pointed, use the file to round them (but don't alter the basic shape).

Surface:

After the nail is filed, its edge must be finely polished.

Take a small portion of 500 grade open coat sandpaper and rub, with a back and forth motion,

the same spot of sandpaper on the edge of the nail, particularly concentrating on the left side of the nail.

The surface of the sandpaper will wear down as you rub, creating an increasingly smoother polishing surface.

Keep rubbing until the edge is as smooth as a glass surface.

Hi JC1s, for those of you who are interesting in signing up for EXCO, the following are the roles and responsibilities you'll have to cover!

President:
Ensures smooth running of practices.

Vice-president:
Assists the chairman in ensuring smooth running of practices.

Secretary:
In charge of various administrative and money matters and attendance.

Publicity IC:
In charge of publicising the CCA (during Open House and CCA Recruitment) and poster/banner-making and noticeboards.

Sectional Leader:
Teaches individual sections how to play a music piece and ensure progress of the section as a whole.

Student conductor:
Arranges music pieces and conducts ensemble school performances.

Quarter master/mistress:
In charge of various logistics and stock-checking stuff as well as the opening of the guitar room.

That's about it! Do note that some of our roles and responsibilities overlap quite a bit. Thus, we should lend each other a helping hand where possible. :) Non-EXCO GEM members should help as much as possible too!

GEM camp concluded yesterday. I hope everyone present had a great time! Our next practice won't be until the 28th of December. Meanwhile, everyone should have their own regular practices at home. :)

Concert updates: Those interested in designing the ticket should keep in mind that the theme of our concert is ROMANTIC and that a NAME HERE would suffice in your design since our concert's name is not yet confirmed. Please e-mail your designs to me (Cheryl) by the 16th of December!

Hello, so yesterday marked the last day of CCA for Term 3. Good job to everyone for successfully learning how to play Summer's Breeze! :D Do continue to do some self-practice because the conductor will be around for the next practice. According to Nikki, you just need 10 minutes everyday.

Here's a video of TJC's Guitar Ensemble playing Summer's Breeze. The sound quality isn't that good but I still hope it'll aid you all in practising:

Hey, on the 29th of May, a bunch of us J1 & J2 GEM members went to watch Jeremy Monteiro & the T'ang Quartet at the Esplanade! I think it was money well-spent despite a few less interesting parts of the concert (I spotted a few people yawning, even I was also guilty of doing so). x)

All in all, here are 2 valuable points that I think we should pick up from the performers:

Do not be afraid to sway your body according to the music. I think you'll be better able to feel the music & hence play better! :)
Do not let distractions get in your way whenever you are performing. The same goes for when you are rehearsing/practising!

Hi, we had our handover session on the 9th of May at Shenna's House. :) Basically, the JC2 EXCO told us JC1 EXCO what our individual duties were. Expect to see a few funny & less-than-glamourous photos of some people (Maybe yourself? Haha.)!

It so happened that Shenna's birthday was nearing (13th of May) so we had a mini-celebration. :) Happy belated birthday!

Shenna's family was really nice to prepare food for us. :)

Sandwich-making Competition

So on Friday, the 8th of May, we had our very first sandwich-making competition! :D

Your dear judges! Me (Cheryl), Ming Yi & Xing Hua. I think we've developed a phobia for sandwiches ever since Friday. :/

Just to recap, the top 3 are as follows:

In 1st place,
We have Jansen's group! They were very thoughtful (the drinks & chocolate!) indeed. :)

In 2nd place,

Fattah's group! The cashew nuts & bananas tasted very good together. :D

In 3rd place,

Jun Hao's group! Hope I didn't get your name wrong, haha. The guitar that has only 3 strings. :D

The sandwiches all look so pretty but ummm, what really goes on during the preparation process?

The guys were trying to get the aircon to be switched on by using their handphones. Hahaaa.

The ice-cream was melting very badly! But the group seemed to have a lot of fun with the melting ice-cream. x)

This sandwich, in my opinion, was the most edible one. x)

Hi! Today was our SYF competition day & we've managed to achieve a Gold! We were aiming to get a Gold with Honours so some of us inevitably felt a little disappointed after the results were announced. However, considering that only one JC got Gold with Honours, we should be really proud of the fact that we managed to live up to the high standards for this year's SYF. :) Go GEM!

I hope that we the JC1s will work really hard so that we can put up a wonderful public performance next year. :D

Hi! :) This is Cheryl, your new Publicity IC! About 2 weeks ago, 6 of us (Nikki, Ming Yi, Hudson, Wei Long, Jonathan & I) performed during the JC1 Common Lunch at the library. Was really glad to see some familiar faces i.e. GEM people in the audience. It was our very first performance together so we inevitably felt a little nervous. x) At least I did!

Anyway, here are some pictures from the lunchtime performance. I hope the entire GEM will be able to do a good job on the 16th of April. :) Practise hard!

Now all the girls have gotten our measurements taken, now we'll just wait.. For our dress and sash :D As for the guys, we've just gotten the attire today! Yay.

Girls don't forget your little gold shoes. Try to get them as soon as possible in case Cotton On runs out of stock. They look fine worn with normal stuff actually.

Chairmain:
Oversees the running of guitar ensemble.

Vice-chairman:
Aids the chairman. Adminstrative.

Secretary:
Admin. Attendance. In charge of $$$.

Publicity ic:
Publicise cca, poster/banner-making. Liase with other ccas.

SLs:
Teach other members. Coordinate a section.

Student conductor:
Arrange songs. Conduct the performance.

Quarter master/mistress:
Stock-taking. In charge of logistics.

However, our job scopes do over-lap because we ought to help out one another in the exco! And you don't need to be in the exco to help out. Even as a non-exco member, you can as heavily involved in guitar stuff too! :D

School has started and yes, just one week of school has been enough to keep us busy.

The 8th International Guitar Festival 2008 (Singapore) & 4th International Guitar Competition from 8-14 December 2008 features artistes, competitors and participants from different parts of the world.

The International Guitar Festivals main objective is to create a platform for renowned artistes to come together to share their arts and experience through workshops, seminars, masterclasses and individual lesson. In addition to create interactive communication between audience and artistes.

The artistes featured this year will be:
i) Angel Romero (Spain)
ii) Nelson Latif & Bosco Oliveira (Brazil)
iii) Jeremy Jouve (France)
iv) Andrea Deici (Italy)
v) Paulino Bernabe (Spain)

As for the competition, there is a total of more than US$30,000 worth or prizes to be won. The winner will walk away with a specially crafted Jose Manuel Aparicio Guitar, Cash 3000, tuners, year’s supply of strings, books voucher, accessories, etc. Till date, the winners so far have been from Taiwan, Russia and China. 2008 will witness a higher level of competition.

Dance of the Yao People (simplified: 瑶族舞曲; traditional: 瑤族舞曲; pinyin: Yáozú Wǔqǔ; sometimes translated as Dance of the Yao Tribe) is one of the best known and most popular Chinese instrumental compositions of the second half of the 20th century. It was composed collaboratively by Liu Tieshan (刘铁山) and Mao Yuan (茅沅) in 1952, inspired by the long drum dance (瑶族长鼓舞歌), a form of traditional festival music of the Yao people of southern and southwest China. It was premiered in Beijing in 1953.

Although it was originally composed for Western instruments, it is generally performed by Chinese traditional instruments (either for solo guzheng,^video chamber ensemble, or orchestral).^video It is also performed by ensembles or orchestras of Western instruments.^video

The work achieved wide attention in 1954, when the arrangement by the conductor Peng Xiuwen was disseminated throughout China.

Musically, the work is in several sections, some slow and some fast. It begins in 2/4 meter at a slow tempo, moves to 3/4 meter, then returns to 2/4 meter in a faster tempo for the finale.

In the late 20th century, the song was used as the basis for several pop songs, in both China and the United States. The first 18 notes of the 1998 song "When You Believe," as recorded by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, are based on "Dance of the Yao People," although the Chinese composers of the original work were not credited.

If i can find an opportunity, i'll get a video of King playing, haha so everyone can clarify stuff from the video. And yes we can have it there. Last saturday, 19th July 2008 was an important day! We had our first public performance! At Pasir Ris Park. I didn't get a picture of us playing though but here are some pictures of the carnival.

ECP FAREWELL BBQ

Before we set off for ECP, we were to meet at Bedok MRT. And waiting time implies picture time, haha. That's King and Shenna. Heh, they look sweet together. Don't get the wrong idea, i didn't say anything. /blinks blinks.

Kudos to King, Safiah, Joanna, Wesley who practised for the performance night! Labamba(sp?) and the other songs. Because we're GEM, even our bbq's tied up with guitar.

That's King and Wesley playing the guitar! Mmm, King's most charming when he plays the guitar. But ha, i've complaints from someone from his hostel that he plays the guitar everyday. Mmm, should i say fortunate/unfortunate hostelmate? :D

Awwww, Safiah looks so sad. Don't emo alright! You've us! :D Next to Saf's Rachel, Zhengxiang and Xinyi. There's some resemblence bet. Zhengxiang and Xinyi! The cheekbones, teeth and fringe. Especially when both of em are smiling real brightly.

Oh yes, those we didn't get to see our door-gift! Here it is! Yeah, we're collecting funds for door gifts. It's pretty nice, isn't it so? We spent one afternoon at Ikea doing this! Anyway, Le Dung isn't pronounced as Lay-Dunk but Lay-zonk. :)

Seniors~ Do work hard for your prelims and As. I recall the ex-ex-president, Darrell saying that the top student would somehow come from GEM! :)

The whole of the J2s. Thank you for the hard work and effort you all have put into GEM. I can still remember tiny details of orientation to every single practice we had. Although there wasn't sufficient time to get to know every single J2 but every GEM member counts.

Alas, the performance. That's a picture of the J2s waiting [insert word: anxiously] before the performance started.

King and Safiah. A take-away point: Smile when you perform. It's contagious. Your audience would rub off some of the spirit and gradually you make their day. :)

At the end of the performance, we celebrated the birthdays of the june babies and that meant cake and birthday song. Gah, Safiah's face is cut. Picture to be replaced when i can find the other one! Major hint to Safiah's admirers: She likes her cake in bigger chunks.

It was for a personal use, a snapshot i got from Shenna, but people who are interested in how to play happy birthday, it's below. Well i didn't know it's only two chords and they so happen to be the first two chords i've learnt. /laughs.
